How To Attend Your Own Funeral - That Which Is Aware

How To Attend Your Own Funeral

It’s 2pm on a lazy Sunday afternoon.

The Church bells ring, filling the air with a sad song of regret and longing.

It’s the day of your funeral.

You died a week ago in a fatal car crash, but you’ve come back to Earth as a ghost to attend your own funeral.

You can see everyone. Your family and friends. People from work. The Church minister.

But no one can see you.

Everyone files into the main Church building, and you take your seat up in the rafters… watching from above.

The minister begins…

“We are gathered here today to celebrate the passing of…”

And so it begins.

The minister’s speech passes by uneventfully. He didn’t know you, so there’s not much he can say about you.

But after a time, your family gets up to speak.

What do they say about you?

What do you HOPE they say about you?

Do they talk about how you took the responsible path, doing what’s expected of you, fulfilling your duty in life? Someone who taught them that life isn’t about being happy or fulfilled, but about doing what’s right?

Or do they describe you as the most inspiring person they’ve ever met? Someone who inspired them to live life on their terms, to follow their passion, and to create their dream life?

In 2016, I asked myself the same question.

I was living in Berlin at the time, and I was torn between focusing on business and focusing on a recently discovered passion for electronic dance music.

Focusing on business felt like the responsible thing to do. I had bills to pay, and it was what my friends and family understood.

But my heart, something deep inside me, was pulling me towards music. I dreamt of being a famous DJ and electronic dance music producer. It made sense to me, but I knew if I told my family and friends about it, about how serious I was about it, that they’d think I’d gone crazy.

I went back and forth on this for months, unable to decide or fully commit to either path.

In the end, imagining my own funeral solved it for me.

I imagined two different funerals representing two different life paths.

In the first funeral, I imagined that I’d stuck with business, doing what I believed was the responsible thing. At the imagined funeral, I saw my future wife and kids getting up to speak and saying something like…

“My dad was a responsible guy and did what he thought he should do. He made great money and was a good provider, but I know that he let his passion go earlier in life, and I sensed a sort of emptiness in him.”

In the second funeral, I imagined I’d chosen to follow my passion for electronic dance music. I saw my kids getting up to speak, saying something like…

“My dad was the most inspiring man I ever met. He taught me I could do anything I wanted to do in life. He showed me that it was possible to do what you love and be happy.”

As soon as I’d completed this exercise, I realized what I needed to do:

Follow my passion for producing electronic dance music, even if my friends and family didn’t understand.

And so, that’s what I did.

I immediately began arranging my life so that I could pursue music.

I didn’t immediately shut down my business, because I still needed to eat and pay my bills.

But I took a big stride in the direction of my dream, and I’m happy to say that I’ve been producing electronic dance music for the last 2 years under the moniker “John Lavido” (look me up on YouTube, Spotify and SoundCloud).

It’s not always easy, but oh man is it satisfying, and now I want to help YOU experience a similar shift.

If you’re anything less than COMPLETELY ON FIRE to live your life, please take a moment right now to imagine your own funeral.

Better yet, imagine at least two versions of your funeral.

In the first version, imagine that you did the responsible thing, whatever you think you “should” do with your life, and see what people say.

In the second version, imagine that you did what you felt called to do, what your heart is telling you to do, that thing you think about from time to time when you allow yourself to dream, and hear what people say.

Then ask yourself…

Which life do I want to live?

If you’d like to live a life of unlimited passion, joy and excitement, you’re in the right place.

In fact, this path and way of thinking has completely transformed my own life, and I’d love to help you experience a similar shift

That’s why I’ve opened up a few spots on my calendar to speak to people who are SERIOUS and COMMITTED to living a life of uninhibited passion, joy and excitement.
